TRELLECK (SOMETIMES SPELT TRELLECH)
is a particularly pretty village with a great deal of history. The village is believed by some archeaologists to have been the site of a large Roman town which matched the size of London and excavations are still taking place http://www.lostcityoftrellech.co.uk/. The village apparently derives its name from the three standing stones, known as 'Harold's Stones' which can be accessed leaving the village in a field to the left on the Chepstow road.
There is also The Virtuous Well once known as 'St. Ann's Well' and was famous for its cures - particularly those of eye ailments and women's illnesses. The well was a place of pilgrimage up until as late as the 17th Century. Visitors to this day hang strips of cloth and ribbons on nearby trees, reflecting a modern belief in the water's healing properties. It is believed that the water of the Virtuous Well runs under Harold's Stones was associated with Druidical rites. Celts regarded wells as entrances to the supernatural world, inhabited by gods or guardian spirits. Folklore says that fairies dance around the well on Midsummer's Eve, and drink its water from harebell cups the following morning.
Tump Turret is a 40 foot mound dating back to Norman times and known to be the remains of a motte and bailey castle. The first reference to a castle in Trellech was in 1231. The motte, or mound still remains but the bailey is now under the modern village. The mound may date back to pre-Roman times and according to legend it is the burial ground of King Harold's men, who were slain in battle at Trellech, as well as being the burial place of plague victims. It is said that a dreadful curse will befall anybody disturbing the mound but this did not stop the Rumsey family building a summer house on top during the 19th Century.
Moving back to more modern times there is an excellent and modern village primary school see attached link http://www.trellechprimary.ik.org/. The local inn has a great reputation for quality food and beverages.
The grand Norman Church dominates the village and is particularly impressive for a village of this size. The Babington Centre opposite the church holds regular local markets, beauty classes, regular film shows, car boots and preschool nursery see webmaster@thebabington.co.uk.
There is also a village Doctors Surgery www.wyevalleypractise.co.uk.
The village also holds annual Country Fayres/Horse Show so as you can see the community is a thriving with a great deal of activity and community spirit.

MONMOUTH is a thriving town with excellent shopping facilities including three supermarkets in the centre including Waitrose, Somerfield, M& S Food Hall and now Lidl on the outskirts. There is a delightful period cinema which is undergoing a refurbishment programme. The excellent Leisure Centre with swimming pools, gymnasium etc. There is a wide range of eating and drinking venues from interesting coffee shops to French, cuisine.

SCHOOLS
For so many parents good schooling is a major concern and Monmouth can offer it all, with an excellent comprehensive school with a wide 6th form syllabus and two highly reputed private schools, Haberdashers for Boys and Girls. School buses are available from most villages. Trellech has a thriving local primary school
