The Old Post Office in Lower Lydbrook is a charming period property probably the largest in a terrace of very pretty individual cottages. Brimming with character which include exposed stone walls, beams and stripped pine doors and period fireplaces in almost every room. Possibly built with Georgian influences the house has been extended to the side at some stage, giving space for three extra rooms which include the Kitchen, a Breakfast/Sitting Room., a ground floor Bedroom with adjoining shower room. This layout is just a little quirky but all the more charming because of it. Entering the main front door it opens to the one side to the Dining Room with beams, exposed stone walls and an old fireplace and to the opposite side to a further reception room again with period fireplace currently used for a Study. The main Sitting Room is situated up the stairs and on the first floor with windows to the front with village views., This room features a period fireplace and access can be gained to gardens via a fully glazed door. Also situated on this floor is Bedroom Two. The large Family Bathroom and Bedroom Three up another flight of stairs on the second floor. The established garden is elevated, as the house is built into a bank but once access is gained the area is reasonably flat with lawns and flower borders interspersed with pathways. The garden also offers a storeroom/workshop which is above the extension below. Indeed this extended area of the house could be with a little work made into a small independent let already having an independent access in situe (subject to planning). IN SUMMARY The Old Post Office offers a lot of accommodation particularly on the ground floor and for the price. It is full of character and has a very homely, welcoming feel from the moment you walk through the door. The roof has been redone relatively recently. The décor of rich colours in some rooms may not be to everyone taste and there may be a little upgrading required as with most period homes but in general the ambience of the house with the beams and original fireplaces make it a charming property. Overall it is a large family sized home with well proportioned rooms and possibilities for two generation family or even a holiday let in an Area designated as of Outstanding Natural Beauty at this price you can’t go wrong and we would advise you to have a look and see for yourself. . The Old Post Office can be found on the right hand side at the far end of a small terrace of houses to the right on the junction to Proberts Barn Lane. FOR SAT NAV USERS THE POSTCODE IS GL17 9NS LYDBROOK Lydbrook is a village in two parts ie Lower and Upper Lydbrook that hark back to the time it was a Mining Village with houses dotted along a sloping valley where the miners dug coal and iron from the surrounding mines which were the industry of the Forest of Dean for many years. The mining industry now wound down and hardly features in the area now. The valley itself leads down to the banks of the beautiful river Wye. Across the river from an elevated position is the old monastery which is absolutely scenic. Lower Lydbrook nearest to the river is in my opinion is the prettiest section of the village it has a village Inn overlooking the river and the monastery. A small public park – seating area also enjoys the views of the bend in the River. Lydbrook itself has a small supermarket, a, fish and chip shop and more inns and restaurants further up the hill. The whole area friendly with a great community spirit. NB Whilst some properties have been know to flood in Lower Lydrook the Old Post Office is not vulnerable as positioned further up the valley road. ROSS-ON-WYE has all the shopping you are likely to need including three supermarkets. All the extra things you associate with a tourist area are also available in and around the town i.e. gift shops, tea rooms, antique shops, restaurants for all budgets. The river area below the ‘Prospect’ is a very pleasant place to spend time, particularly in the summer, watching the world go by at one of the riverside pubs, or perhaps the regatta from the boat house. There is a public swimming pool and a modern library. Markets are held on Thursdays and Saturdays in the centre of the town in the old market place. MONMOUTH (approx 3 miles) is a thriving town with excellent shopping facilities including three supermarkets in the centre. There is a delightful period cinema which is undergoing a refurbishment programme. The excellent Leisure Centre with swimming pools, gymnasium etc. There is a wide range of eating and drinking venues from interesting coffee shops to French cuisine. .Markets are held each Fridays & Saturday with Farmers Markets once a month on the old Bridge. SCHOOLS For so many parents good schooling is a major concern Ross-on-Wye offers an excellent comprehensive school (John Kyrle )with a wide 6th form syllabus and two highly reputed private schools, Haberdashers for Boys and Girls in Monmouth approx 12 miles away. Both Cities of Gloucester and Hereford both within 20 miles have Cathedral Schools. MOTORWAY The M50/ M5/M4 are all reasonably close giving good access to major cities i.e. Birmingham, Bristol, Newport, Cardiff, Bath, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Hereford all within approx 1.5 hours drive away. RAIL NETWORKS Available at Abergavenny , Gloucester, Hereford or Newport. NB: All measurements have been taken using Laser Measure and cannot be guaranteed to be accurate and are shown as guide only.
